Roberto Mancini Officially Resigns from Italy National Team

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) made a surprising announcement. Roberto Mancini officially resigned from the position of coach of the Italian national team on Sunday (13/8).

The FIGC said in a statement that they had received Mancini's decision to resign the day before.

"Due to important commitments and the team's 2024 European Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine, the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days," the FIGC added.

Mancini was appointed coach in May 2018 after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Mancini came in to replace Gian Piero Ventura.

With the Gli Azzurri, Mancini successfully won the 2021 European Cup. But that success was followed by failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mancini's resignation happened suddenly without any warning. Even though earlier this month, the 58-year-old coach was also given the responsibility of coaching the Italian U-21 and U-20 national teams.

Regarding potential replacements, Italian media named Luciano Spalletti as a candidate. This cannot be separated from Spalletti's success in ending Napoli's 33-year wait for the Serie A title last season before leaving his position.
